About Surgery Central

We are a specialist surgical practice in the Newcastle area, serving the Hunter and Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, Australia.

Established in 2011 by Dr Costa Karihaloo and Dr Jon Gani, Surgery Central is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary surgical practice providing comprehensive care across a broad range of general and sub-specialty surgery. Our team of highly qualified surgeons offer expertise in all areas of Abdominal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery and Obesity Surgery including:

Upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery
Bariatric (weight loss) surgery
Endocrine surgery
Laparoscopic and robotic surgery
Trauma and general surgery
Hernia repair, anti-reflux, gall bladder, appendix surgery, and endoscopies

Our surgeons see both public and private patients in the Surgery Central consulting rooms in our Gateshead practice: Lake Macquarie Specialist Medical Centre and operate in both public and private hospitals.

Supporting our surgeons are experienced nurses who contribute to the delivery of coordinated, compassionate care. We also collaborate with Shine Dietetics, who consult within our rooms to provide nutritional support for patients undergoing bariatric procedures.

About the Practice

The Staff in the doctor’s rooms are all very experienced and are available to make appointments and take enquiries Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. Sometimes clinics run late and you are welcome to call and check the status of your appointment prior to attending and they can notify you of any known delays.

We have practice nurses’ here in the rooms. Either may see you at your visit and are available before and after your operation to help with any questions regarding your wounds or any concerns you may have.

Shine Dietetics, experienced dieticians, are also located within Surgery Central for appointments. They have particular expertise in obesity and other areas of nutrition in which they may be able to help both before and, most importantly, after your operation.
